June 4th 2011, Match on heron lake today was well
supported and won by Pete Whale with 37lb 10oz, second Neil Pegrum
with 36lb 7oz and third Kev Banford with 36lb 5oz, the average weight
was about 22lb, the catches were all made up mostly with brown and
gold goldfish, tench and bream mainly caught on pellet, casters and
red maggots although most baits seem to work on the day, a big thank
you to Chris Potter for the after match barbecue which was enjoyed by
all.
The lake has been producing some very good weights for
the pleasure angler with bags of fish over the 100lb reported, tench
and bream to 5lbs, and some of the goldfish are over 3lb now, most
baits and methods catch fish.
On a recent match on the canal on farmers reach, there
were a number of small common carp arond the 2lb caught with one
angler catching five, the canal in general is fishing quite well, the
boat traffic will increase more now so first light at about 4am and
last light around 9.30pm early and late sessions are a better bet for
the pleasure angler, finding some of the bream shoals will certainly
result in some good catches for example just past the style along
brimslade or the bays at wolfhall and milkhouse waters are all
normally good summer spots, feeding a sweet groundbait with some
squatts/casters in and fishing maggot/caster or worms on the
hook.
May 2011, The lake has been producing a lot of fish
lately, the last two matches have been very good with april's match
being won with over 40lb followed by five weights over 30lb, nearly
everybody caught 10lb+, May's match was won with 25lb again the
backing weights were good considering that fish were spawning all
around the lake, reports have come in of a lot of pleasure fishing
weights over 50lbs some of the better ones double that, brown
goldfish, tench and some skimmers/bream the main species caught,
casters or pellets the main baits

On Heron Lake there will be a stocking of roach approx. 10,000 fish up to a pound going in this spring (2010) in mid march from the environment agency to which we own them a big thanks. there are also plans from the club for further stockings now of bream, crusians and F1's, it will be anounced here as soon as more is known, members on watch for cormorants are reporting no sightings at all particularly early mornings which would be their normal arrival time so all is looking good for a good summer on the lake.
After the cormorant problem the lake encountered over the winter of 08/09 the lake is recovering well helped by several cages being built (see photo's) and floating rafts of plants tied over the top so don't fish to close to these fish refuges as the refuge cages are slightly bigger than the floating islands, we now have a lot of small roach and rudd as well as quite a few perch in the 6-8oz range, there are also some larger specimens that survived which spawned early in the year, the tench are showing more
as well as well as the crusians and goldfish which all seem to be 1 1/2lb+.
The fish that seemed to have suffered the most appeared to be the bream with only the odd fish reported so if you do manage to catch a few please let me know, in the mean time there are plenty of fish to be caught on most baits ranging form maggot and caster through to pellet, meat and paste, even punched bread is catching.
The canal has been fishing very well at Bedwyn end for roach, perch and skimmers, as the weather is warming the rest of the reaches will get better as the shoals of bream and tench are starting to move, it has been said that the longer day light hours encourages the tench to feed as much as water temperture, the carp fishing in the spring is always worthwhile as some nice doubles are moving on a few reaches like brimslade and beeches to name just two.
Night
fishing to be allowed on all canal reaches for an additional
charge of £20 per year, if the committee receives complaints of noise
or disturbance then the reaches available will be reviewed,
