On Heron Lake there will be a stocking of roach approx. 10,000 fish up to a pound going in this spring (2010) in mid march from the environment agency to which we own them a big thanks. there are also plans from the club for further stockings now of bream, crusians and F1's, it will be anounced here as soon as more is known, members on watch for cormorants are reporting no sightings at all particularly early mornings which would be their normal arrival time so all is looking good for a good summer on the lake.
After the cormorant problem the lake encountered over the winter of 08/09 the lake is recovering well helped by several cages being built (see photo's) and floating rafts of plants tied over the top so don't fish to close to these fish refuges as the refuge cages are slightly bigger than the floating islands, we now have a lot of small roach and rudd as well as quite a few perch in the 6-8oz range, there are also some larger specimens that survived which spawned early in the year, the tench are showing more
as well as well as the crusians and goldfish which all seem to be 1 1/2lb+.
The fish that seemed to have suffered the most appeared to be the bream with only the odd fish reported so if you do manage to catch a few please let me know, in the mean time there are plenty of fish to be caught on most baits ranging form maggot and caster through to pellet, meat and paste, even punched bread is catching.
The canal has been fishing very well at Bedwyn end for roach, perch and skimmers, as the weather is warming the rest of the reaches will get better as the shoals of bream and tench are starting to move, it has been said that the longer day light hours encourages the tench to feed as much as water temperture, the carp fishing in the spring is always worthwhile as some nice doubles are moving on a few reaches like brimslade and beeches to name just two.
Night
fishing to be allowed on all canal reaches for an additional
charge of £20 per year, if the committee receives complaints of noise
or disturbance then the reaches available will be reviewed,
